The St. Patrick’s Swim Team is sponsoring a 8 week learn-to-swim program on Wednesday nights beginning the last week in January at Ft. Hamilton High School Pool.
The program is for children in Kindergarten through 4th Grade who DO NOT know how to swim at all or have only a very basic understanding of how to swim.
The purpose of the program is to teach children the basic fundamentals of swimming, concentrating on kicking, arm stroking and breathing which we hope will give children confidence about being in the water. The program is a eight-week program taught by certified swim instructors. The program is flexible enough to accommodate many levels of competence, from children who are afraid to place their face in the water to children who have some basic idea of how to swim. The children will be divided into groups based on skill level as determined on the first night. The structure of the lessons will depend on the make-up of the final group of children enrolled. Many children will be in water above their heads but the instructor is in the water with them and they use the outside lanes of the pool where the children will always have the wall for support. The pool is staffed with two full time lifeguards who are on duty at all times.
Please have the children at the school 15 minutes prior to the start of each lesson. They will be escorted to the pool level together.
Please note: The Fort Hamilton pool is a competition pool so the temperature of the pool runs on the cooler side. Some children like to have a swim shirt over their bathing suit to feel more comfortable in the water which is acceptable.
